Wendi Schneider to Jury Botanical for the Southeast Center of Photography
“In times of turmoil we often turn to nature for solace and centering. Whether bringing light and focus to what we are losing or celebrating rebirth, from broad landscapes to close up or microscopic forms.
Artists throughout the ages have been drawn to the vast and varied world of botanicals. What moves you? Do you celebrate the essence of beauty or strive to heighten recognition of the perilous path of our environment? Are you inspired by a single bloom or a profusion of blossoms in a lush bouquet, enchanted gardens manicured or messy, plants endangered or invasive, carefully cultivated or sown by nature, bursting forth or shriveling on a vine?”

“Schneider shoots with the ghosts of Brigman, Steichen, Stieglitz and other members of the pre-Modernist Photo Secession standing by her side, lending her work a timeless, beguiling air of memory. For Schneider, time itself is her demeanor, her medium where a conversation well over a century old continues between her and those artists who inspire her . . . Paying homage to those who used photographic imagery like ingredients in some pictorial gumbo, she uses time as a spice infused with narrative, a flavor seeped into the process of layering effects. Building a bridge into this digital age, Schneider unabashedly flaunts her camera vision, informing it with a printmaker’s devices and a painter’s disregard for rules.” – Rick Wester

Schneider writes “My work in the States of Grace series illuminates transformative moments of spiritual connection to nature, rooted in the serenity I find in the sinuous elegance of organic forms. I photograph intuitively to make the intangible tangible, creating impressions of fleeting moments of vanishing beauty in our vulnerable environment to honor the ephemeral. . .”
“Wendi Schneider: On Beauty” Featured on LENSCRATCH
“On Christmas, I love to share a project or a practice that celebrates beauty. I didn’t have to think long and hard to consider an artist who has a legacy of creating work that unabashedly reinterprets the natural world in ways that make us slow down, take a deep breath, and relax into wonderment. Wendi Schneider’s photographs are sanctuaries for the soul, respites from the strife and turmoil that the world presents us with. Her photographs remind us that the natural world is waiting for us, to bask in it’s magic…and yes, beauty.”

Wendi Schneider’s “Patina Collection” Featured on All About Photo
Schneider says “I create illuminated illusions – tender, gilded offerings of fleeting moments of beauty in our vulnerable environment . . . My process creates a surface that shimmers as the viewer’s position and ambient light transition, reflecting the mercurial light at capture. Elevating the ephemeral, I follow instinctively where each image and print takes me, often altering the color, texture or gold, and honoring the variations within the edition. Each of these unique framed prints is a one-of-a-kind object of reverence.”

Wendi Schneider to Jury “Landscape” Exhibition for Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis
Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. Many landscape photographs show little or no human activity and are created in the pursuit of a pure, unsullied depiction of nature, devoid of human influence—instead featuring subjects such as strongly defined landforms, weather, ambient light and other sublime elements. Beyond purely aesthetic considerations, landscapes often contain intensely personal and emotional subjectivities; evidence of secret histories of fondness, love, and nurturing – or of past emotional turbulence, loss, longing and regret.
Entry Deadline: October 31st, 2021
