Portraits and self-portraits have been fixtures in art for centuries. They can reveal both hidden and visible characteristics, create fantasies and myths, describe performative roles, and question identity. How do we construct and project our identity and reality via portraits? Do they open a window into ourselves and our lives, or protect our vulnerabilities? Five of Wendi Schneider’s figurative photographs will be included in the exhibition.

Catherine Couturier Gallery is delighted to present Into the Mist, an exhibition of new work by gallery artist Wendi Schneider.
In her latest series, Schneider offers glimpses of respite amidst the vague unknowing that has defined living in the time of COVID. She ventured into the mountains of North Carolina at the end of Summer 2020 to find a reprieve in shinrin-yoku, the Japanese term for the practice of forest bathing. The photographs captured on a drive amongst the trees and fog inspired Into the Mist.
The Photography Show presented by AIPAD will be on view from May 20-22, 2022, at Center415 on Fifth Avenue between 37th and 38th streets.
Please find Catherine Couturier Gallery at Booth 212 to view Schneider’s work in person at the first photography fine art fair in New York City since 2019.

“Schneider shoots with the ghosts of Brigman, Steichen, Stieglitz and other members of the pre-Modernist Photo Secession standing by her side, lending her work a timeless, beguiling air of memory. For Schneider, time itself is her demeanor, her medium where a conversation well over a century old continues between her and those artists who inspire her . . . Paying homage to those who used photographic imagery like ingredients in some pictorial gumbo, she uses time as a spice infused with narrative, a flavor seeped into the process of layering effects. Building a bridge into this digital age, Schneider unabashedly flaunts her camera vision, informing it with a printmaker’s devices and a painter’s disregard for rules.” – Rick Wester

IF 6 is Rick Wester Fine Art Gallery’s first in-person group exhibition since before the start of the pandemic, signifying the beginning of a return to normalcy. In the same light, IF 6 brings hints of ecstasy, springtime and rebirth.
IF 6 is a visual representation of adaptability and perspective, with the title taken from Jimi Hendrix’s song, “If 6 Was 9,” which questions the possibility of another scenario. What would happen if 6 was 9, if the situation were reversed, if something you thought you knew ended up being something else entirely? It is a metaphor for the experience of the past year for most of us, everywhere.”

“As I began my first of several journeys through the nearly 1900 images, I began to pull evocative images that made me feel something. These selections created the basis for the exhibition. It was a pleasure to have time to live with the images and to return to those that lingered in my memory. I looked for a variety of interpretations and processes, classical and contemporary, that worked together to create conversations. Ultimately there were more than a few that had to be eliminated in order to create a cohesive exhibition of only 40 images.”
