Wendi Schneider’s “Evenings with the Moon” Featured in SXSE Magazine

June 12, 2021

“In ‘Evenings with the Moon’ I contemplate the power of universal experiences to unify and find transcendence. My images of the night draw on the moon as muse and the juxtaposition of darkness and light to express our shared longing for freedom, peace, love, and harmony amidst the chaos of the world. The gilded prints echo the luminosity of their celestial inspiration. This synthesis of form and content, paired with poetry and music, encourages the viewer to consider the commonalities in our collective consciousness.”

Wendi Schneider Featured in “Thinking About Photography”

April 11, 2021

“I have chosen six photographers for this showcase whose art runs a wide gamut of what “staged imagery” can involve. Several have found imaginative ways to transform the everyday through reinvention and abstraction, finding the power in the ordinary. While others seek to evoke a mood,  capture vanishing moments of beauty, or even include the presentation of the print as part of their staging.

A photo reviewer once told me I was a film-maker – and I think that describes these photographers as well. The desire to control what exists within and without the frame is at the heart of staged photography.”

Wendi Schneider Featured in “Still in the Studio” at Catherine Couturier Gallery

February 10, 2021

“It has been a year of more and less. More appreciation, compassion, loss, recognition, reflection, solitude, and work. Less travel, interaction, and concern about unimportant things. Even mundane tasks have developed into more meditative moments. I am acutely aware of the passage of time and of my emotions, which seem to resonate more deeply. And as usual, but perhaps more than ever, I have turned to my art for serenity and respite, as making art to celebrate beauty has always been my personal refuge…” — Wendi Schneider

Wendi contributed a post to Still in the Studio, a weekly series created in response to the pandemic, where artists offer insight into their work and artist practice.

Wendi Schneider Portfolio Featured in ARTDOC Magazine

December 22, 2020

“Trees are silent protagonists in the work of Wendi Schneider, which is rooted in the serenity she finds in the sinuous elegance of organic forms. She shares moments of respite in beauty as an antidote to the unease in the world in which we live. “If I can touch someone else with my work, I’m deeply moved and grateful. I hope that viewers will appreciate the beauty and embrace the need to care for our endangered planet.”

Wendi Schneider Interviewed by Denver Women Magazine

November 2, 2020

Wendi Schneider

“Wendi is widely known for her ongoing series of hand-gilded photographs, States of Grace –– illuminated impressions of grace in the natural world. Drawn to the serenity she finds in the sinuous elegance of organic forms; she embraces photography to preserve vanishing moments of beauty in our vulnerable environment. She has perfected a gilding process in which her images seemingly dance on the paper’s surface amidst reflections of light on precious metals, creating a synthesis of technique and subject.”

Wendi Schneider Featured in The Royal Photographic Society Visual Arts Magazine

October 12, 2020

Wendi Schneider was a Featured Photographer in the 158th Issue of Visual Art, the magazine published by England’s Royal Photographic Society Visual Art Group. Many thanks to the Royal Photographic Society for this wonderful feature.

“I was in New Orleans last year and found ‘A Gallery for Fine Photography’ and it was here, among a fantastic selection of images, that I discovered the work of Denver-based artist Wendi Schneider. Her work literally shone out, by the use of precious metals to gild the reverse of her work, she creates other-worldly representations of the environment around us. I admire the way she has produced a beautiful body of work in a unique and magical way.“

Wendi Schneider - Withdrawal to Tranquility

“Her work is influenced by the lush landscapes of Memphis and New Orleans, her collection of art and antiques from the turn of the twentieth century, and a background in painting and art history – in particular the work of Steichen, Whistler, and other Pictorialists and Tonalists. She turned to photography in the early 1980s to create references for her paintings, then combined the mediums…”

Wendi Schneider featured in Catherine Couturier Gallery’s “Safe in the Studio” Series

April 9, 2020

“My practice has not shifted measurably in the time of Covid-19. I turn to nature to dwell in serenity amidst the chaos, for it is there I find sanctuary and respite. I am transfixed and transformed when I capture impressions of fleeting grace in the natural world. Calmed by fluid, organic shapes reminiscent of the elegant whiplash lines of art nouveau botanicals, I photograph intuitively.“

Wendi contributed a post to Safe in the Studio, a weekly series created in response to the pandemic, where artists offer insight into their work and artist practice.

Wendi Schneider Interviewed in “SHOTS Magazine”

September 30, 2019

SHOTS Magazine featured Wendi Schneider as the designated “Emerging Photographer” for their JOURNEY issue. Many thanks to Douglas Beasley for his wonderful interview!

“I saw your portfolio ‘Evenings With the Moon’ at PhotoLucida and was knocked out by the physicality of the prints — how they felt in my hand, the translucence. I thought the gold leafing was especially effective in giving the prints a sense of both delicacy and depth. That quality is so hard to convey in the two dimensions of print.“

Wendi Schneider featured in “Catalyst:Interviews”

May 22, 2019

Many thanks to Michael Kirchoff for his illuminating interview with Wendi for Catalyst:Interviews, his series of discussions with photographers on the creative process.

“Images like hers are achieved only through a process of thoughtful examination and execution. … The artist’s hand is evident in every single one of them, and they share the same qualities as their creator – uniqueness, elegance, and a reverence for the tangible.”

Interview: “A Conversation with Wendi Schneider”

April 14, 2019

Thanks to Lannie Versair for publishing this wonderful interview on his blog, Shutter Talking!

“As to what to gild, it’s intuitive, as is what I capture. As I have worked with the process, I’m often drawn to images with light areas that might show more of the luminous gilding, but sometimes a pop of light can be dramatic and effective on a darker image. It depends of the desired outcome, though the hands-on journey of each piece may take it in a different direction.“
